Aaron Arrowsmith was born on July 15, 1750 in Durham, England. He moved to London around 1770 and around 1780 found employment with the firm of John Cary, an already established engraver and cartographer. His 1796 maps of North America and 1807 maps of Scotland are considered his best works.
Shortly after 1800 Aarowsmith joined with an American partner, and in 1804 they produced their first atlas.
Arrowsmith's maps were known for their accuracy and were an important resource for planning Lewis and Clark's journey.
His reputation as a cartographer and engraver earned him the position of Hydrographer to His Majesty.
He was also a founder of the Royal Geographical Society.
He died in 1833, but his company was continued by his sons and nephew.
