The advent of the use of lithography for mapmaking led to development of a strong cartographic industry in New York City. One of the important firms responsible for this was the J.H. Colton firm, who issued this fine map in their atlas of 1855. The precise detail and soft hand color of this map are typical of lithographed state maps of the second half of the nineteenth century.
